The Power of Now

About a year ago, I went to a life-changing workshop in Sedona conducted by the amazing Hale Dwoskin.
While I learned about a hundred ways to be happy, productive and successful, one of the most important things I walked away with is just how powerful NOW is.
As human beings, and particularly as Americans, we can be very future-oriented. We plan for the future, attempt to predict the future and generally spend much of our time thinking about what things are going to be like a year, five years or even twenty years from now.
All of that is not only fun, it’s important. Without a vision for where you want to go, without a dream to follow, life can feel pointless and random. Most of us have some unfulfilled desires that we think about and plan for and that’s a very good thing, as it is a necessary component for achieving our goals.
However, another component is just as important. That is NOW.
When you think about life and what is happening to you, you begin to realize that all you really, truly can control is this moment right now. In this very moment, you can absolutely, 100% determine what you are feeling and doing.
That isn’t so even five minutes from now. There are so many variables that could impact your life then. You could get a phone call from a long lost friend or an email from your biggest client with a complaint about your service. You could suffer a heart attack or have a religious epiphany. The stock market could crash completely or it rebound mightily.
But right now, you know exactly where you are and what is going on both inside and outside you. You have the ability to choose how you want to feel and what you want to do.
If you want to be happy, think about the most wonderful thing in your life, right now.
If you wan to be rich, do something that will move you closer to that goal, right now. Create a picture of your desired life in the future, but they spend each NOW doing, feeling or thinking something that will move you towards it. Don’t waste time planning each step of the process, as there are simply too many uncontrollable variables to consider. Instead, just focus on doing something NOW to move forward toward your dream.
